Diatomaceous earth, also known as diatomaceous earth, is a finely ground natural powder that is made from the fossilized remains of single-celled algae called diatoms (Latin: Diatomeae).

These microscopic organisms lived millions of years ago in aquatic environments – mainly in lakes, seas and other bodies of water. After they died, their siliceous shells settled to the bottom of these waters, gradually creating layers rich in silica. Over time, these layers turned into sedimentary deposits, which are now mined and processed into the powdered form of the well-known diatomaceous earth.

In the case of diatomaceous earth, however, it is unique in that it comes from biological sources – diatom shells, which have a specific porous, spongy and microscopically sharp structure. Diatomaceous earth is used, for example, as an abrasive (fine grinding material) in toothpastes or scrubs, as a filtration medium in brewing, winemaking or water purification, as a natural pesticide in agriculture, but also as an auxiliary substance in the food industry, where it functions as an anti-caking and absorption agent. In industry and technology, it is valued mainly for its ability to bind impurities, capture particles and at the same time remain chemically inert.

In relation to the human body, diatomaceous earth is most often associated with its silicon content, although silicon in its amorphous form may not be directly usable by the human body. However, silicon itself occurs naturally in our bodies - it is found in the skin, bones, cartilage, nails, hair and connective tissues.

In these structures, it plays an important role in their strength, flexibility and structural integrity. In nature, we mainly obtain silicon in organic forms from our diet - from foods such as whole grains, rice, legumes or some vegetables, where it is bound in the form of soluble silicates.

Although diatomaceous earth contains a high proportion of silicate, its potential connection to human physiology is seen more as a matter of lifestyle, personal beliefs and alternative approaches. In some communities, it is used as a dietary supplement in the form of a drink - the powder is mixed with water and consumed.

Interestingly, the diatoms themselves, from which diatomaceous earth comes, are still alive and active organisms in both fresh and salt water. They are an important part of the ecosystem, producing a large part of the oxygen and forming the basis of the food chain in the oceans. Their siliceous shells are not only a record of the past, but also a reminder of the interconnectedness of nature, life and mineral structures.
