What are omega-3 fatty acids and how do they work?

Omega-3s are essential fatty acids that our body is not able to produce on its own, so we need to take them in diets and supplements - we need them for our body to function properly. 

Eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) are two transformed types of essential omega 3 fats found in fatty fish (mackerel, sardines, salmon, herring, trout, anchovies, tuna) that live in cold waters. 

Fish rich in omega 3 produce both EPA and DHA from alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), which they obtain from marine phytoplankton and seaweed.

Flaxseeds, hemp seeds, chia seeds, flax and hemp oil, avocados, walnuts and walnut oil are popular plant sources of ALA, but in fact lack EPA and DHA.

Remember that the quality and effectiveness of fish oil supplements do not depend on the amount of fish oil, but on the concentration of EPA and DHA they actually contain!

In the winter months, gel capsules may solidify and become cloudy during transport - but this is not a defect! Different types of fat have different melting points, which means that they solidify at different temperatures and this is reflected in the cloudiness of the contents. However, cloudiness does not indicate the quality or effect of the product!
